The Roller Coaster Tycoon series has been an extremely popular simulation game where players aim to build a theme park from scratch. Frontier and Aspyr have teamed up with Atari to bring the latest installation, Roller Coaster Tycoon 3: Platinum, to the gaming community.
The basic premise behind the game is that players are given a plot of land, a certain budget, and some amount of time to develop a successful theme park (and different game modes that define that success accordingly). This remains the same here, but with important changes. Players in Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 will be allowed to not only build rollercoasters, but also safaris packed with animals or water parks that both attract even more guests and admission fees.
Another fun element of the third installment in the series is that players can ride the rollercoasters that they create as well! This is a change from simply designing and watching people go through, and a fun one at that. The game also now incorporates a more set up weather feature which can attract or detract attention from the park.
Players can also now design character types that can end up visiting their park at will using the in game Peep Designer. This is a fun twist on the typical few faces provided by the predecessors of the series.
The game has three different modes of difficulty to choose from so that players remain in control of how much they want to be challenged. On top of this control, players also determine which challenge they will take on for the park, which allows them to determine the objectives of the game. Finally, for those just wanting to build and design a theme park, there is a freeplay Sandbox mode that basically sets players loose on the territory.
All in all, another successful addition to the popular series, well done development team!
